Introduction

Apr 22rd Stormforge gave a webinar Solving Application Cloud Waste: A Panel Discussion

Panelist were:

Big Topics were:

  • Cost control and attribution
  • Scheduling work:
    • Dev/QA gets turned off
    • batch jobs run at "off peak times"
  • ESG analysis
  • Introducing FinOps

and

  • FinOps v Devops

It was a panel discussion and it covered a lot of ground. I'd like to do a more open discussion to talk about what people are actucally doing out there and how.

To that End I'm reaching out to my network to organize a discussion May 3rd 2021 at 11am - 12 noon EST.

Agenda

I would like this to be small ~20 people tops such that we can do more individual interaction and be more interactive.

It's important to me that the talk is inclusive and I'll endeavour to create an open and inviting environment for folk who don't normal attend, including but not limited to Women, People of Colour, LGBTQ2S+, and any person who would otherwise be marginalized.

To that end it's possible that I fail at doing that and ask that if you do not feel welcome, please let me know how I might do that. I'm also doing work to determine who I might do that.

I'd like to be able to publish the findings publicly, anonymously as requested. I will assume that if no consent has been given to mention who spoke about what, that that will be omitted.

What is FinOps?

  • Who knows about this already?
  • Who is doing this but didn't know they were doing this?

What are the challenges in the field? What are the successes and progress that have been made?

  • Petition Attendees
  • How do we deal with these challenges?
    • Mitigation
    • Open issues
    • ...

What do you want to see?

What does the business want to see?

What is the maturity model for this practice? Often it's not linear.

Where are you in maturity model?

What tools do you use?

  • Commercial
  • Vendor supplied ( GCP, Azure, AWS, etc )
  • Open source or community driven.
  • In house built

Commercial

Vendor supplied

  • AWS Cost explorer
  • Azure ...
  • GCP

Open Source / Community

  • cloud custodian ( the Open sourced CapitalOne tool. Anyone using this? Can we get notes from the field? )

Other topics:

Cool / Extra Topics:

  • AI / ML for tuning: like Stormforge, anuone used that ? Looks "neat", pretty niche.

Land Acknowledgement ( Toronto )

Following the TDSB's model:

“We acknowledge we are hosted on the lands of the Mississaugas of the Anishinaabe, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the Wendat. We also recognize the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and the Inuit peoples”
